Fight club
The day had finally arrived. After so many broken plans- bad weather, different lunch hours, Aunt Flo's visit, and not bringing a change of clothes, Bjarna and I finally had our long awaited fight on top of the Aotea Centre roof. The weather was good, I managed to coax Brett into giving me a 1 o'clock lunch, B and I had our change of clothes, I wasn't menstruating, and so nothing could've rained on our parade..but how wrong I was. You would've thought a 20 year old would behave himself on the road, but no. Bjarna crossed the road, ever so excitedly, landed on the wrong foot, and sprained his left ankle. Not wanting the fight to be postponed yet again, we got on with it.
Now, the outcome was quite dire. First of all, we went bare footed and the ground was hard, hot, and harsh. With adrenaline gushing, I never really took notice of it. But now, damn, there are three huge blisters on my left, and one huge one on my right sole. I hate to admit it, but the white belt boy actually trashed a 1st dan black me. Because he actually injured his leg before the actual spar, his kicks were limited. So all he did was block and followed up with punches. I took a lot of hard blows and believe me, I moaned a lot. 'Fighters have to suppress their pain,' was his advice and it wasn't until we got back to work that I found out my kicks had grazed his arm..real bad. He ended up limping, not from me kicking his arse, damn, he kicked mine, but from his sprain and no doubt raised a lot of eyebrows. I had a lot of other work mates tell me it wasn't fair for a guy to spar with a girl, and that they have faith in me kicking his arse before the spar and how they told Bjarna he shouldn't have bullied me, but thing is, taekwondo is a sport. An art, a culture, a fight that you don't moan about even when circumstances change. What's the point in putting the blame on someone else? You choose to do it. So do it and face it.
But yeah, it was great fun. A good work out. My feet are still sore. And I have to endure another 4 days of work, 8 days of interview preparation..
